DON’T WASTE YOUR CANCER EXPERIENCE!

Our wounds are our sources of growth.  Rachel Naomi Reman

Don’t waste your cancer experience by forever being a victim, share the positive side of this dreadful disease, and if you say there are no positive sides, just remember the dead don’t talk.

Everybody has a story to tell, mine is in January 2008 my father died, in March my mother suffered several major aneurysms, in April I was laid off from work, called back in May just to be laid off for good.  To make matters worse, I was also diagnosed with 3rd Stage Breast Cancer and the knowledge that I had only 30 days of Health Insurance coupled with the doctors were not optimistic.

Those five months were a lot to take in, not to mention the rest of the story, but what makes my story unique is the fact that after all that I Got Up.  Now, don’t get me wrong, am sure others have too, am simply telling my truth.

I know people who have cancer and they are doing well, except for the fact that is all they talk about, and not necessarily in an encouraging way.  It’s all about the pain and endless doctor visits, and I know people who are cancer-free, and all they want to talk about is Why did this happen to Me?  The difference between them and me is, I Moved On.

I don’t know for the life of me why some waddle in misery, telling the same old horror stories over and over.  Not only do I have a new story to tell, I walk a new walk.  The past is not the place to be if all it entails is drama.  I Survived, so for me, that means I can continue to live a productive life or create one.

As bad as some situations were concerning cancer, there were some things going on behind the scene.  One is, isn’t God Good?  Where is that conversation, where is that joy?  I believe for myself and many others, we survived for a reason and I am sure it was not to stay in a dark place, so I refuse to keep cancer at the forefront of my life.

Cancer was not the only life-altering event that has ever happened in my lifetime; the car accidents, bad decisions, abuse at the hands of another were all a part of life that was not pleasant, still, I had to put all that behind me too.  I have learned to lean toward the positive side of life and to share those experiences.

I know there is life after cancer because am living it, coupled with I am more knowledgeable, and hopefully more compassionate toward others and whatever ails them.

I love telling the stories concerning how God saved my life, not so much about how many scars I wear, although every scar makes me who I am;Survivor.  So I walk and talk like one, and just so you know, A scar means you survived.; never forget that.

Breast Cancer or any kind of issues of life is an opportunity to use our experiences to encourage others.  Tell the women, and tell the men because they get Breast Cancer too, to go and get a mammogram instead of having a pit party or a feeling of invincibility (it would never happen to me).  Encourage others to trust themselves and find the strength to do what is best for them; being scared is just part of the process.

It’s bad enough to cope with life or death situations, but it’s quite another thing to put self-esteem, body image, and femininity above our very life.

For me, I needed three things; one was to keep my dreams alive; two, I needed to get a second opinion, and three, I was determined to be positive and give positive feedback instead of having a victims attitude.  My motto is to Never give up!

Survivors, please don’t wast your cancer experience on the negative things, exploit the good.  Tell someone You are braver because you fought a Giant and Won.  Tell somebody you are stronger because you had to be.  Tell somebody you are happier because you learned what matters, and you stand taller because you are a Survivor.

Don’t let your pride get the better of you, tell somebody because Fear does its best work in isolation.
