BAPTISM OR BUST?
Baptism: a Christian religious rite consisting of immersion in or sprinkling with water as a sign that the subject is cleansed from sin and constituted as a member of the Church. The Bible tells us Jesus will wash our souls clean and all our sins away, for that reason I think I have been Baptized at least 3 times, and each time I was trying to make sure my sins were washed away. DUH!
Dag! I just told on me, again. Just Sinful. Another reason to read my book I Survived 60 Years To Get Cancer, Then Kill It./ The Norvie L. Cherry Story xulonpress.com/bookstore
The 1st time I was baptized in a Baptist Church. My family was of the A.M.E.Zion persuasion; now we are members of From The Heart Church Ministries. At the time we lived within walking distance of the Baptist Church, so I attended. I was in Elementary School, still, I knew I wanted to be a Baptized; there was something about it, something I wanted for myself.
A few years later we had moved and was closer to an A.M.E. Zion Church, so I was baptized, again. I felt the need to be re-baptized because I wasn’t a Baptist.
Lo and behold I was baptized a 3rd time in my early 20’s, all because of a direct reaction to a comment claiming that a Saint Christopher medal that was given to me by a friend as a going away present was an Idol. Saint Christopher, although not officially recognized by the Catholic Church is the Saint for travelers and children. My friend told me to ask Saint Christopher for safety when traveling, the Bible say pray only to God.
Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; Deuteronomy 6:14
With Deuteronomy fresh on my mind, I looked up the word Saint as though I needed clarification and found the basic meaning is to sanctify, to set apart or make holy. What? I thought a Saint was a goody-goody two shoe. I immediately packed a bag and set off for Alabama to see my grandfather; a Presiding Elder and Civil Rights leader in Montgomery about getting Baptized Again for Reassurance.
After talking with my grandfather I no longer needed to be sprinkled or dunked every time I thought I may be in trouble with God because of my actions. I laughed and asked him to baptize me anyway. Why not, he was my grandfather; Everyone else had their shot. 🙂
Granddaddy explained I was baptized the 1st time for all the right reasons; A personal, and public identification with Jesus, and I was Covered by the Blood and my sins were washed away.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1st John 1:8
My guilt before God was already removed the moment I trusted in Christ. And baptism was my personal testimony, and the inward assurance of my passage from the old life to the new one, which has afforded me Unshakable Faith because I believe every word written in the Bible.
Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him. Proverbs 30:5
FYI: If you are not Baptized it may be Something to Think About, but indefinably Something to Do.
And now why tarriest thou? arise and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16 KJV
Thank you, Lord, for it is in Jesus name that I pray He wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Psalms 51:2-3
